Borrow Large Forstner Bit?

Anyone have a large Forstner bit – 4+ inch diameter – I can borrow for boring a single hole in bottom of crumbly bowl?

You can get them and fairly cheap.

@mblatz if this is not a drill through, then a forstner is perfect, I wouldn’t recommend a hole saw. If you do plan to drill through, then a 4” hole saw should work well. Only thing I would do on a drill through, is be careful on the opposite end for tear-out. One way to prevent this is once the pilot hole goes through, then switch the hole saw to the opposite end and finish the cut. (You may already know that, but I thought I’d throw that out there anyways.)

This is to just remove about 3/4" of depth in bottom of a bowl that is already crumbly/crumbling a bit…not all the way through, so right…hole saw not appropriate choice for this.

Cheap is relative…~$45 (for the 4-5/8 inch) for single use isn’t very attractive to me . But if you buy one, I’d like to borrow it (per subject/title)!

Collet jig & router may work as well.

Interesting, out-of-the-box idea. Depth from rim of bowl to bottom is about 6-8 inches, though…even with a collet extender that would probably prove a challenge, if extenders are even made that size. If you have one can I borrow it

See I thought it was a bottom bottom of the bowl.

Here is your cheaper option than purchasing the forstner bit.

Just remove the drill bit, setup your piece on a drill press. Make a bunch of steadily wider cuts. Had to do a similar project in high school, took about 45 minutes. You will need to do finish sanding to level everything out, but it will remove enough material to make sanding a viable option. Plus, your are gradually increasing the hole size, keeping the stress on your crumbly bowl to a minimum.

If you intend to give me shit over $10 like you did Owen over $45, just shove off and save the key strokes. $45 is really cheap considering the special need you have.

It might work.

Can I borrow ~$12 from you?

I’m thinking it’s the inside bottom, not the outside. Wasn’t clear from the OP.
