Bits suggestion

Got me an Inventables X-Carve CNC router at home, currently unassembled. Inventables is extending a Black Friday deal into Cyber Monday where, if I spend $50 or more I get a gift certificate for $50 (go figure.) So, being rather uncertain about such things I’d like some suggestions as to what bits would be advisable as a starter set. I’m probably looking at things like how many flutes, spiral direction, etc.

There may be some useful links here: http://www.shapeoko.com/wiki/index.php/Endmills

I recall reading quite a bit of discussion over what a good starter set might be on the Shapeoko forums.

Now if I can finish reading the article before the sale is over.

Make sure and get at least one engraving bit for artistic endeavors. The 20 or 30 degree engraving bits with 1/8" shank is probably what you’d want.

Something like these: MSC Industrial Supply - Metalworking tools and MRO Supplies

I’ll have to take a quick look when I get home. I’m think all I’ve got is a 1/4" collet so I’ll have to see if I can get a compatible 1/8" to back up the selection I’ll need.

You can probably find it in 1/4" if that’s what you need, I made an assumption about the machine to be honest and figured it used the 1/8" size.

Yup, it’s a Dewalt 611 with 1/4" collet. But a 1/8" wouldn’t be a bad thing to have handy.

(Why does this site not like the spelling of “collet”?)

I suspect the Hunspell folks included the N most common English words in their dictionary to keep the size / performance reasonable. In any case, “collet” did not make the cut.

Oddly, “Collete” (proper noun) is included despite occurring 40 times less often (according to Google).

(“Hunspell” is also in their dictionary. Those shameless self-promoters.)

Edit: clarification.

I dunno, I still can’t figure out why we had an entire thread with the word “hording” in the title. Will it not let people spell “hoarding?”
