Big Fan dropped off in ELab

Somebody dropped this off in the ELab
No heads up. No nothin’

Blue tape with something about rewiring the motor side.

Soooo…whoever dropped this off - what ya got in mind?

I’m not sure who wanted to take advantage of your vast trove of repair knowledge, but its seems to have an intermittent short in the switch. It really is too nice of a fan to toss. After to plug it in, just give it a nice slap or two and it will spool right up. You could watch the camera and then enlist the courier in the repair process.

That would be an intermittent open. A short would be stuck on or worse, fireworks…

IF it’s just the switch - there’s some options -

  1. probably don’t have a 4 position switch. replace w/ single switch tied to high speed setting
  2. no switch - hardwire across bad switch for high spd → plug / unplug to turn on / turn off.

This probably isn’t going to get done any time soon. Guessing this was used to vent the compressor room. Need it sooner than later? Strongly recommend simply go buy one.

Is it a short or is it an open? I have no idea, but point taken.

That fan would cost a lot of money. Teach 4-5 people how to fix a fan. That would be worth your time:) Transfer some of that knowledge you have accumulated during life.

Hmmmm…You know how to use a fluke meter - check for continuity / shorts / etc. Go for it!

Working on other projects for DMS. Recruit some help.

If its not an emergency I would be willing to host a free class to troubleshoot and fix the damn fan but don’t have time for another few weeks.

Don’t need a class. Don’t need to make a production out of this. Grab the Dewalt fan in the computer classroom if needed. It gets done when it gets done. Good grief.
