I was given a 3 foot section of a square tubing. Roughly 10" x 10" and I’m wanting to cut both ends to a clean 90 degrees. I’ve got an angle grinder and cutting wheels but do we have anything in the shop that could do this better/faster?
I think the large band saw in the metal shop might do the trick?
That is a big piece of tubing!
The blue band saw in the metal shop does not cut straight. I do not know about the grey one, I’ve not used it.
I would suggest talking to Tim @TBJK on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. when he does Tool Time with Tim in the Machine Shop (or if he replies here) to see what suggestions he has.
I personally would think setting up a guide and using the bandsaw and machine shop would give you a better straight edge.
Beyond that, I would say use a speed square to mark all four sides, then take your time and cut it by hand with an angle grinder.
The gray one was cutting straight. Either way I would just cut and mill it. The issue is if the piece is short. The gray bandsaw has a ledge and if your piece is too short it will rock forward and your cut won’t be straight.
According to his post, the piece is 10x10 in square tubing, 3 ft long…
