Bad guys have won

That’s awesome. I was just thinking “sounds like it’s time for someone to challenge youtube’s monopoly”. Didn’t EVEN think “someone’s already doing it with pornography”. I mean, porn’s only 98% of the Interwebs these days. Don’t know why I didn’t notice it…

Well, it is often called gun porn, so…

How Youtube screens content. AKA. How your morality is worth only $15/hour.

Of course, there’s this too.

Except that YouTube is not a free speech venue. It’s a moderated venue with rules and is much like this forum where they mostly take a light handed approach.

What have the bad guys won (the topic of this thread?). Because I am for gun control does not mean that I want to take anyone’s guns away - I just want more sanity.

I grew up around guns, I grew up hunting, plinking at targets with a .22, and I still own guns. I have taken both my boys to the Garland gun range (lifetime membership) because I wanted to pass on the respect that I learned.

Freedom of expression, as John pointed out is not a liberal vs. conservative issue.

What seems to have been lost - and it is evident everywhere and on both sides - is the ability to engage in discourse. I don’t want to convince you, nor should you feel compelled to convince me. But neither of us should discount the other - we should be willing to sit down and discuss, to hear each others concerns with an open mind, and to see if we cannot, somewhere, find common ground. For instance, many on this thread imply it is their constitutional right to bear arms. I can agree with that. What I want to know is why you don’t feel this should carry over to own, say, a bazooka, or a fully automatic weapon. So clearly, you already are willing to draw the line somewhere. I know my example is absurd in the extreme, but I am curious about why some and not the other.

I respect your position - I simply ask that you respect mine and to do so without name calling.

As a private company, Google can exercise control what happens on their platform (YouTube). It’s somewhat troubling seeing how they are far and away the dominant platform when it comes to user-created video content. Unlike a local broadcaster they don’t have a government-granted semi-monopoly - there are other similar platforms to flock to.

Not entirely sure what Google’s business reasoning is. I’m guessing that the backlash against the NRA coincides with the long-running trouble they’re having matching up advertisers to complimentary content. There could also be some virtue-signalling they feel will benefit them in the long run.

Having observed the NRA to a degree - and other organizations like GOA almost entirely - paint themselves into the same corner as the most vociferous GOP primary voters, I can see why Google might want to avoid gun-related content that’s overtly political. However, this near-blanket prohibition and de-monetization goes way beyond that purpose, if that is indeed their objective … not a lot of politics in the likes of Forgotten Weapons nor C&Rsenal channels that go into the history and mechanics.

Because these are OK

But firearms video are not.

Because people who listen to ill-informed noisy people with opinions about everything under the sun are the decision makers of where ad money is going to be spent.

you’re making a lot of noise right now.

Here’s the thing. I don’t like guns. I don’t want them in my house. I think that there are a lot of things we can do to reduce gun violence in this country, the vast majority of which do not involve preventing law-abiding citizens from getting their hands on guns, and that starts with people on both sides of the issue coming together and having a rational discussion.

Calling people that see things vastly different from you a “bad guy” or an “ill-informed noisy” person DOES NOT make it easier to have a discussion.

Hi. My name is Ashley. I hang out in the common room; please, come find me. I would love to have a conversation with you and learn more about you and your thoughts on this issue minus the name calling.

Thank you for pushing past the shouting, tic-tac-toe argumentation, and rigid positioning around the subject. I wish this happened more often.

The bad guys I refer to are the guys who come knocking on your door in the middle of the night with evil thoughts in mind because they know you have no means of defending yourself. Every time the means to defend ourselves are reduced, they win.

Ill-informed noisy person.
One such person is that teacher wanting to run to be a congresswoman and wanted to destroy her husband’s AR15 by cutting the barrel on it.
That’s not how you destroy a firearm.
Cut the receiver, that’s how you do it.
By doing what she did, she just created a firearm(granted what effectively amounts to a single shot “bolt-action” AR) that’s deemed illegal to own without a tax stamp under the existing NFA guidelines.
The ignorant and ill-informed example she sets, as dramatic as it is, encourages law-abiding firearms owners to become law-breakers as well should they choose to follow what she did.
I have no beef with people who want to turn in their firearms, just don’t set the wrong example or mislead people into doing things that they shouldn’t be.
Will the BATF prosecute her and others like her?
I’ve no idea.

Do you think they should be?

These guys? Looks like they need to make a comeback, because their numbers keep dropping.

Thank you for clarifying this.

I don’t know about this women. Do you have a name or a news source about this so I can read more about it?

You’re welcome.

Here’s a reposting of the video she posted(which she supposedly took down when she was called out). Some may argue that her actions is political grandstanding to get her more votes.

Ignorance of the law has never been a good defense in court.

I’d rather they not make a comeback. Nobody wants to be part of that statistic.

Thanks for the funny papers.

Here’s an example of what happens when one does not have the ability to defend.
Video seems to be from a patrolman’s body cam.
