During the Cold War (when the USSR and the USA targeted each other with massive nuclear arsenals), we sent Pershing missiles to West Germany (yes, Germany was still divided from WW2).

After the Berlin Wall fell, Bowie collected his accolades, which is appropriate. Here is Bowie accepting his his due credits. David Bowie wrote and sang the lyrics which inspired the Germans to take their own fate into their hands:
