Autonomous fixed wing plane

I have a big school project coming up and I want to make a fixed wing plane that can fly to a waypoint and drop a package autonomously. I know about rc planes but nothing about autopilots. What would be the best flight controller for gps waypoints. Would I set the waypoints on a computer and send them to the plane? I am plnaing on not using a long range rc and fpv system because it could just fly out of my range and come back by itself.

ardupilot is probably the easiest to get going.

some other options: dRonin, INAVflight, PX4

typically you will define a mission on your computer or phone app and upload to the drone via bluetooth, wifi or rf modem.

Pixhawk, AMP flight controllers will be your best bet for getting going. Easy to set up and have a large community to draw information from.
