I was practicing threading late Monday night and was threading close to the Chuck. When I reached to stop the thread feed I grabbed the automatic Feed lever instead. The tool post ran into the Chuck although both were parallel to each other and it did not bind the motor or hurt the bit for that matter. I quickly stopped the motor and back to the tool away from the Chuck to asess any damage. The motor Still runs, the lathe still spins up in either direction but the thread screw and the automatic clutch bar are not turning.
Needless to say I’m very frustrated and apologize for any inconvenience this is for any other members. Please let me know if there’s something that I can help do to repair it.
The shear pin did its job. It’s just a 1/8" pin, pretty easy to replace.

a 1/8" pin
[/quote]Might be heading up there later today to make something on the Sherline or Engine lathe and can fix. Spares in the teachers cabinet? Can’t seem to recall …
I don’t remember either if they are any in the cabinet.
@nicksilva - we need to stock some shear pins for the lathe.
yeah you’re right. there is a lot we need. I still can’t purchase so the list just gets longer.
Send me a list of links and quantities and I’ll order today.
I have no idea what the pin even is. maybe Tim knows.
1/8th brass pin was what was in there. I believe the book calls for a specific but I think the brass pin works well for our application.
I have some 1/8" brass rod that we could cut down for a pin if that would get the lathe going. Would it be helpful?
that’s kind of you. sounds like that is all we need.
I plan on being by tomorrow afternoon. If we want to do that then we can.
yes, because the sooner we get it running again, the better.
thank you.
I’ve been doing some reading in the manuals and searching for the pin in the schematics. I think this is the pin and the other page has the instructions for replacement. It might be possible that just the gearbox drive shaft pin sheared but it may be that both that and the lead screw drive shaft pin also sheared.
Neither of the shafts spin when the motor is engaged which is what makes me wonder.
In the meantime, I have updated the Tool Status Board to show the Colchester as “degraded capability”.
That’s the right pin. We have replaced it a few times.
I’ll swing by tomorrow afternoon and drop off the material.
The pin now has been replaced. I need to make a custom wrench for the ease of replacing.
thank you Tim. You da man!
Tim,
I got called to a customer on the way home or I would have posted earlier. The metal shop didn’t have any 1/8" brass on hand, or I would have gotten some.
Thanks for getting it fixed.
