Autoclave and Foodsafe Oven for Bio

Hello everyone!

Just to let you know about a couple of developments.

First out of my own pocket I’m going to be getting an autoclave shipped to me from North Carolina. My mycologist friend out there is getting a bigger one for his business and is offering to sell me his old one half price.

I am excited about mushroom growing! The necessity of a sterile environment and tools makes an autoclave a critical bit of equipment. That said, I probably won’t be having it live at DMS. Not until I can reliably produce my own mushrooms at home. (I have no problems having them up at the space for the fruiting so people can see them and eventually eat them.)

I just want to let people know, because if they want to use it I have no problem bringing it up there.

Another thing, I have found an electric convection oven and stovetop combination for about a hundred dollars and am currently looking to purchase it for Bio. I’ll have to reorder things a little in there, but with an oven in bio we’ll be able to brew up batches of beer wort without using the massive propane burner that runs out of fuel and is frankly a tad scary.

This also lets us brew up batches of soda to ferment with yeast, bake fresh bred with our own sourdough starters, steam extract the essential oils from our herbs…the list goes on!

I must stress though that this is going to be for food safe applications only! I don’t want it to become a plastic heater for a vacuformer or something. I know we had some hot plates running around at one point or another but I think they’ve either been taken by other committees or weren’t in our jurisdiction to begin with.

I’ll see about getting some come next couple of paychecks so that for non-food safe applications we can heat things up a bit.

Cheers!

We should probably sketch something out about how we want to organize Bio. We don’t have a ton of space, but I think if we worked on some shelving and stuff we could maximize what we do have.

I am 100% in support of the food-safe stove and autoclave idea for Bio!

Woo Hoo,
I can’t wait to bake the first loaf of bread, I think I may be racing Tom on that though.

The stove’s dimensions are 30"x27"x44"

I am beginning to think I won’t be able to get it in there until next week. But I do intend to be down at the space to do -some- reorganizing before I leave for the weekend.

Looks like I’ll be there tomorrow night.

The hour of our victory is at hand!
