My phone accidentally fell on car audio knob, taking it out with it. It is one of those spring loaded variety.
Now I cannot get it to stay in.
Any suggestions?
Thank you.

If the retainer is cracked or the spring is missing, replace it. If it’s car OEM there is possibly a dealer part or likely an aftermarket part. This varies a lot by manufacturer. If it’s aftermarket, I would contact the manufacturer. Same caveats apply. Too many manufacturers (car and car stereo) instructon for any reapair is ‘replace unit.’
Exactly,
I asked dealer and he said to replace it. It will cost around a grand at a minimum (if I go for used version, that too).
I am not sure what is wrong with it - but I do have the spring and the knob.
Any suggestions on how to check if the retainer is cracked?
Pics of the knob, spring, and intended mounting location might help us better understand what we’re talking about.
Short of that, or in addition, year, make, model, ICE options might help us understand what we’re addressing.
Right now, this could be anything from a vintage Porsche volume control knob to a Ford central control knob, each of which would demand its own pathway to function/repair.
I will get the photos and post them here, for better guidance.
Thank you.
Attached are photos of the dashboard as well as knob that fell off. Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.
I’m having trouble identifying what has failed. Have you tried reinserting it?
That is the issue. I tried re-inserting it, however it does not stay put.
For me this is very unfamiliar territory so I am reaching out for help / insight / guidance.
Control shaft has broken away from the component. You’ll need to tear it down to see what the component is and what the physical size is so you can order a replacement.
It’s probably far easier just to buy another OEM stereo off eBay.
There’s a Toyota P/N: 51825 radio available on eBay for $95 (+$12.95 S&H) -
https://www.ebay.com/itm/126028193902
Car-part.com has them listed from 22.5$ to 358$. For the radio. That’s local pricing, essentially junkyard. You could buy the cheapest and rob the component off the radio. Or change the whole radio. Not sure if they have to be theft programmed or not. Some places will give you a money back guarantee to work.
Thank you.
Now that will help me provide the direction for next step.
Thank you,
You saved me lot of time and effort. I will definitely check it out.
Thank you,
I will definitely check it out. Definitely the way I plan on proceeding.
It doesn’t pop-in pop-out like the OEM, but it might be an option
Wow. This is an awesome option.
Never thought about this option.
Thank you for sharing.
Park the car under the sun for about an hour to warm up the plastic then pull out the right one and push it into the left side, if it stays then you will need to a new knob. You can pull from a junk yard or maybe 3d print one.
