Atomic & Optical Physics - 9.4.2 - Traps for ions - Penning traps

The Penning Trap concept came from Amanda’s drawing today at the Science Convo.

I see an augmentation. Instead of a spherical electrode at the center, perhaps a very fine point of Iridium, where our Deuterium atoms wish to reclaim their electrons. We would drastically reduce the cross section of collision of our Deuterium Ions. So we pinch the ions into a fine alternating field in the Penning Trap, as they hurl toward the extremely fine surface area of an Iridium electrode.

I have no way of calculating the lifespan of the Iridium tip under these conditions, but I’m guessing we had better gather our data quickly, it won’t last long.
