Ask Me Anything - About the MakerSpace
Do you have questions about the MakerSpace? Ask me. Test me.

Come chill and laugh and learn. We will have questions and hopefully matching answers. I’m working on food. Bring that and drink.

New here? Or been here and still wondering about where x tools is?
What class should you take for ___?
Who knows about ___?
Do I have to pay for ___?
Will I get into trouble for ?
What the %$#* is that?
What if my foot hurts? (spoiler - quit kicking things without steel toes)
Where do i buy X?
Why doesn’t the MakerSpace do ___?
HOW CAN I HELP? (I love the person that asked this!)

I hope to make this a regular thing. Not just me, but challenging our experienced members to join in.
**Note. This is totally a PR Stunt. But for real. I do not know everything about the MakerSpace, but I do know who to ask.

Why is it called Dallas Makerspace when it is in Carrollton?

Why doesn’t DMS have any employees to manage the basic things? Or pay honorariums to those that complete projects for the space like they do for classes?

Why does it cost over $1000 to gain a quorum of members?

Why doesn’t the space have window tenting in the purple classroom?

Why is it so hard to hang 10 by 10s?

What is in the basement / dungeon that keeps scaring members?

Would you rather right one horse-sized duck, or a hundred duck-sized horses?

(sorry, had to, it’s an AMA tradition)

count me in on the b-list for both. If I’m free and at the space I’ll swing in and answer a few.

I know what’s in the basement. Will field that question at Sept AMA. Count me in.

24 Hot Ham-and-Cheese Croissant sandwiches.
That’s my application.
For Sept 3.

Do you mean fight? If so, the answer it clear 100 duck sized horses. Because at that scale a horse wouldn’t have effective weapons for attack.
:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

We started the group in Dallas proper and we service the DFW area.

Because when we started, funds were so low that we spent all our income on Rent and Utilities, there wasn’t enough surplus to pay for employees. Now that we do have surplus, there isn’t enough surplus to pay everyone that supports DMS through helping run the space. So choosing one group to pay and not others will lead to issues. Also, hiring employees will force DMS to pretty substantially change it’s current business model.

Some things like this are kind of starting to happen with the paying for membership of people that help around DMS, though I don’t agree with the practice, because it seems like favoritism rather than the thanks of a group. We pay for classes because we weren’t attracting people to teach classes at a successful rate. The honorarium program changed this drastically and we are still seeing the effects of this change today as we tend to have more than 10 classes per day at DMS.

There is no financial cost to get a quorum of members. The Dallas Makerspace define a quorum as the presence of 1/3 of the voting members at a meeting.

The windows in the purple classroom are actually tented, just not super dark. Now we haven’t upped the tenting of the windows in the purple classroom, because it doesn’t actually solve the issue of heat transferring through the window. With the most reflective tent on the windows, a large amount of heat would still transfer through the windows killing much of the cost savings. So have we thought of other solutions? Of course we have, the top solution to actually better the situation would be to artificially double pane the windows, but the costs are much higher for solutions like this and the gains in efficiency aren’t as attractive to our BOD and Membership to subsidize the costs.

Blame @uglyknees, just kidding. The group that devised the hanging system wanted a solution that didn’t leave holes in the wall when hanging artwork and when no artwork is on the wall would be nearly invisible. Thus, the elaborate fishing line system.

I’m guessing you are either talking about off-site storage or your talking about how some members like to slam our forum system because they have issue with disagreement. Off-site storage is a storage facillity a couple blocks away from DMS and is full of abandoned projects and committee items that will either be thrown away or may some time in the future make their way back to DMS. As to the TALK forum being named something terrible, that is often the aftermath of a moderate to large disagreement which are common in a social environment like ours, given the vastly different goals and experiences of our membership.

Hope these help.

Then how do you do it for the upcoming board election once Luke leaves without paying $1500 for notifications?

I’m struggling to think who here thinks beer is scary …

There are many ways to notify members besides physical mailings. But, for elections we do try to do a mailing to notify the membership. Another option would be to just organize a meeting with sufficiently pressing matters and spread the word as far and wide as you can. Not sure what the current voting membership numbers are, but I think a 1/3 is probably less than 200 people.

Dallas Cowboys have never been in Dallas.

The very first meetings may have been in Dallas IIRC

Correction, back in the 60s, the Dallas Cowboys played out of the Cotton Bowl in Fair Park aka DALLAS. I think it was the early 70s when they moved to Irving and then late 2000s when they moved to Arlington. Personally, I would love to catch a Cowboys game at the Cotton Bowl. Would just be amazing to see the game without the Giant TV and being so far away.
