Article: Urban gardening group uses innovative methods in Pullman

"The Cooperation Operation takes its harvest to local farmers markets to exchange the fruit, vegetables and herbs for volunteer hours, donated items or money. The group also plans to hold weekly workshops to teach people healthy recipes, soil remediation techniques and even basic bicycle repair. The first workshop on food preservation is expected to be held in July.

“The group’s newest creation, a roughly 7-foot dome of bicycle wheels, was funded through a 2014 grant from the Archdiocese of Chicago. The igloo-esque structure dubbed the Terradome, a combination of the Latin word for earth and the popular Public Enemy song “Welcome To The Terrordome,” is expected to be covered in cucumber vines and surrounded by morning glories by the end of summer, when the group hopes it will host music events, including rap battles.”

The heart of the article centers around the group’s conversion of a contaminated vacant lot into a gardening area. They are using mushrooms to decontaminate the soil of dioxins, while growing food in raised beds (using anything they could find to create the beds, including old canoes). Then, they barter with the food for volunteer labor, supplies or money.
