April 2019 Metal Shop Committee meeting

The metal shop committee meeting is next Saturday April 6th at noon. I think we will do some maintenance on Big Red during this months meeting/cleanup. We will be cleaning it up and greasing the components that need it.

Administrative agenda items:

  • take additional nominations / offer ups for upcoming committee election (May 4th)
  • discuss what we want to do with the current phased expansion
  • vote on installing LED lights on shop. Chris Marlow estimates ~$650 to do the entire room including bulbs, electrician, and disposal.
  • someone has proposal for a Miller inverter TIG due to the high failure rate of the lincoln
  • discuss magnetic Drill press. Prices vary. ~$400 for Evolution, ~$700 for DeWalt, and ~900 for the Milwaukee. These are all cordless versions with approx 1.5" available
  • do we want the drill press and if so where will be anchor it?

Other items for todo list:

  • weld oven jig (come on, it’s been months)
  • finish the second oven shelf using 3/4 angle (similar to first one) and weld another.
  • do a bimonthly sorting of the steel supply by front door (some of the heavily used plate can probably be cut for easier storage)
  • vapor hone probably needs some love
  • update dynatorch software for domain login support (Dynatorch has a beta version listed for us where this is the major change)
  • check our current assortment of safety glasses (both shaded and clear)
  • clean up committee roll up since it’s currently overstuffed
  • clean up tall cabinet on welding bay. Stuff in it can more likely be tidy’d up across the back row of shelves. It’s never closed anyway.
  • make Vinyl / Other labels for the front tool chest “KEEP CLOSED” (large, inside lift lid), “Batteries” (outside lid , smaller), “Material Removal” (for material removal drawer with files etc), “Screwdrivers / Pliers”, “Hammers and Punches,” “Power Outlets” (on lid)
  • check welder wire and gas
  • inspect large belt sander Dust Collector
  • discuss a proper class for the tubing bender since it has been requested and currently taught on the fly. (As a side note the next die was ordered, but has a long lead time). Whomever evaluates the class should include some of the bending software as part of it
  • check grinder wheels
  • fix the instructions for vapor hone and laminate the new one (lists too high a pressure, should say just 100 PSI)
  • find some way to lock the pressure regulator on the vapor hone due to repeated abuse

Items for Acquisition on supply runs:

  • some 3/32 or similar steel cable and ferrules to make parts necklaces
  • Vapor Hone media, if needed (Aluminium Oxide, by the Bucket)
