We noticed over the weekend that all of our helping are missing their roach clips. Our suspicion is that miscreants had a doobie party.

If you have a time frame, I would suggest checking cameras and seeing who used the tools during that period. With @artg_dms’s sign off I believe you can request access to the cameras to try and help find the lost tools.
I also thought those had gone missing months ago, did we purchase new ones that had been dissembled again? Or are we possibly re-discovering an older issue again?
Yes, this happened some long while back. Someone for some reason disassembled the helping hands parts and the 'gator clips were missing. This and other aberrant behavior will be more closely monitored now that the E Lab has 2 cameras up and running. Miscreants will be spoken to and given a chance to amend their ways. Refusal to “grow up” may result in losing their privileges in the E Lab.
Who jumped to what conclusions???
I was expecting “We found a hash pipe in the e-room” not “some alligator clips are missing”
Just saying…
Funny: “Shaggy doob rollers made off with our clips!”
Not so much: “People are using drugs in electronics.”
One is silly, while the other is … an accusation… : /
My (apparent) status as an ESL aside, inside jokes don’t usually survive a retelling very well.
I was having the urge to point out that “alligator clips” are NOT “roach clips”…
without a file to remove the teeth.
Has anyone noticed anyone using BOTH the Electronics Lab AND the Machine Shop?
Given the damage we have seen to the tools, it seems clear that the tools in Electronics are being used for metal shop type projects.
With the average skill level that shows up in the e-room, I’m not sure how we can keep that from happening. How to properly use flush cutters (what not to do) is like a 10-minute talk.
I was borrowing @wandrson’s the other day and stripping wire with almost alarming ease … amazing what tools in good condition can do.
I have had those wire strippers for about 30 years…
Plain simple common sense goes a long way. This “character” started with one pair, apparently wasn’t satisfied with the results and picked up the second pair and continued on. My guess is we’re dealing with an inconsiderate lazy as… that didn’t want to take the time to get the proper tool. Unfortunately a 10 minute dissertation on how to use tool isn’t going to help. Being banned from the E Lab for an extended period of time might get the message across. Now that both cameras are up and running, it may be time to catch some these “characters” and make an example out of them.
I guess it could be laziness, but I’m inclined to think ignorance. This is the kind of stuff I did when I was 12 and didn’t know what to do/how to use certain tools.
That one on the right looks like it was used to cut steel wire of some sort…?
Maybe it would help if we had progressively smaller diagonal cutters in addition to the flush cutters… since cutting wire isn’t even something you want to be wasting the flush cutters on…
That might help clue people in not to use tiny tools for big jobs.
I think the space needs a general lesson, warning, about re purposing things. I am seeing more of that recently. I need stepper motors, lets get the ones from the PC Mill. I need a big drill bit for the ryobi drill, lets take one from the machine shop and turn down the shaft. Pretty soon it will be, I need some t-slot bar, that laser cutter thing has some, lets take a piece out of that, I need a motor, lets take one from that big router table thing…
A simple rule, you do not get to alter anything in the maker space. You can use the tools in the makerspace to alter anything you bring in. If it is not yours, you can not alter it. You can use it. That is all.
I think the most alarming thing I’ve seen is bolts and nuts “borrowed” from the gantry crane. One would think it’s unnecessary to put a sign on equipment saying not to take bolts and nuts from it. I think it’s a very small minority though. Most members that I’ve met are pretty freaking awesome people (not sarcasm).
