I’ve been sitting on the couch looking at vintage-ish signs and I think this skill is dying and I would like to see if we could get a course put together. I think makerspaces are a perfect place to keep the embers burning for so many things. I don’t know, just an idea.
Did you know … that the old school folks who used to put gold leaf letters on doors (think vintage detective movies) painted the letters with gelatin and then placed real gold leaf into the wet gelatin.
Or so I have been told.
Kewl idea Nicole!
Interesting Chris!
If we don’t happen to have any members who pinstripe, maybe you can reach out to this guy? He mentions something small starts out at $50… Perhaps he would be interested in doing a demo or class or something for honorarium or for pay?
NOTE: I don’t know him. I just looked on Craigslist and he has a lot of sample work uploaded on the ad.
Old school pinstriping and sign painting is a lost art!
I have a big interest in both! I wish that I had the talent! As I travel around the US, I photograph many old vintage signs (mostly ghost signs and vintage neon signs) and old pinstriping works of art.
There’s a really cool museum located in Cincinnati, Ohio called the American Sign Museum. It’s a very good museum that documents American history through the types of signs that were design, develop, and manufactured! If you ever find yourself in Cincinnati … You need to visit the museum!
A few years ago, there was a really good book published, called Sign Painters and then a documentary was made of the book (link to the trailer). The trailer is 2 mins and 48 secs … It’s well worth the time to watch it! These old works of art are fading away!
There’s a really cool old school sign painter & pinstriper that’s located in Denton, Texas. He has a company called Starr Studios, that does awesome signage and pinstriping. Checkout his web site. Maybe we could invite this guy down to the Space to give a talk and lesson sometime!
Would love to have a nice hand painted sign on the front glass.
My dad started in the sign business doing hand painted window and truck doors. He was such a great hand letterer. I wish I had gotten some of his talent.
Hand-lettering and pinstriping is a dying art, but there is a DFW-based group that does pinstriping and hand painting in the custom car community. I’ve got a friend that is part of it. I should see him tonight, and will see if he, or one of his friends, would be interested in coming out to the space for a demo, or to teach a class.
Talked to Sean at Starr Studios his interest is peaked and he’s been thinking of doing workshops for years. I’m emailing him more specifics. I’ll keep you posted!
My friend wasn’t at bowling this week. I’ll talk to him the next time I see him, but not sure exactly when that will be.
