I am in need of more mentors for the CIS program here at LHS. Pairing an at-risk student with a mentor is hands down the most impactful service I can provide.
My goal this summer is to recruit more mentors to serve our LHS kids!!
What is CIS Mentoring?
A CIS mentor spends one hour every week, mentoring an at-risk student in a one-on-one setting. CIS mentoring is a one year commitment. These pairs are gender-specific and usually take place during the student’s lunch time. Mentors meet with their students to discuss academics, college plans, self-esteem, and other personal issues. Many mentors say that CIS mentoring one of their most valuable life experiences!
How can you help:
If you are a part of any sort of religious group, community organization or network, social group, etc. and you think some members of that group would be interested in mentoring - I want to talk to them!!
Just reply to this email or contact me on my cell (469) 464 - 9413
Give me the name of the organization and the best way to contact you over the summer AND/OR the best person to contact to reach out to that group. I will take it from there!
My dream is to pair every CIS student with an adult mentor. Help make my dream come true!!
Happy Summer!!

CIS-genered? Computer Information Services? Computer Information Security? Communities in Schools?
If it’s computer (networking, programming, etc…) related then the company I work for has time off for employees who donate time to organizations that doesn’t count against PTO balances.
Communities in Schools - this is for kids who really need some true leadership from strong-willed adults who will speak with heart but also have forward moving positive direction. The kids I know in this program are all absolutely wonderful, but are dealing with usually poverty or harsh backgrounds.
I did a program like this for two years while in College. We worked with elementary students in groups of about 10 the first year and transitioned to a 1 on 1 with high school students the second year. I worked with a very interesting Latino student that always had questions for me. At 23 I found myself surprisingly prepared as often I served more as a personal sounding board rather than instilling knowledge of the world. If you have the time to commit it is very rewarding.
Awesome. Contact Chelsea directly please to discuss the details of how you would be willing to help. I was telling someone else it’s not always “successful” (in our older eyes) but it’s meaningful and important. I’m so very thankful that so many of you were touched by this post. It warms my heart.
That might ba a good hook to really develop a relationship with the kids but realize this is about mentoring and fostering a relationship - pushing them forward and helping them make positive decisions. I think it everyone’s interests and hobbies are so diverse it will be amazing to see what change this group could bring to the kids.
The kids in this program have some staggering issues to deal with. Last year my friend was mentoring a kid who was living behind the movie theatre homeless - home issues - all sorts of very large issues. Your job wouldn’t be to swoop in and be a hero it would be to help armor them and help them walk into a future of the kids own creation.
