Anyone have tips for Patio Cover Permit applications?

I’m trying to build a backyard patio with a patio cover and am going through the process of applying for a permit. This is what they require:

Anyone have any tips on how to design/get the permit approved? Im just gonna use MS Paint to sketch up the designs by copying others online…

Not looking to hire contractors. Open to any sort of advice on the actual construction/material of the patio cover as well- looking into polycarbonate but probably will just use wood.

The construction will also have to meet code because they will require an inspection when you are finished.

I actually recommend using Google slides or Microsoft PowerPoint if you have it. For something like this they can make a rudimentary CAD program to do stuff like site plans

I am not a voice of how to accomplish. However, we just sold my late mother-in-laws house, and having her patio plans helped avoid the cost of a new survey. So my 2 cents is tho keep them with your house papers after this is done.

As for the first two items, for a fence and later a shed I used the survey done when I bought the house. I just used a marker to show the new stuff and called out applicable dimensions.

When I needed to come up with some specific drawings and plans for something a lot like this I used Inkscape, since it was able to show actual length of lines, design to scale, use different shapes, colors, and doodads. For example:

Also, not quite what you asked about, but still relevant: are you aware that most counties, and maybe some cities, will consider this an “improvement” and raise your property taxes accordingly?

Keep in mind every city will have different requirements. Not all adopt the same building code. This could be by book or year

Lastly don’t forget if live in an HOA you may need to get their ”blessing”

Depending on the city you are in, their board of adjustments or equivalent may have public resources including templates for you to fill out. Good luck with your project, sounds like a lovely addition to your home
