Any turners have suggestions on doing an urn?

I guess basically what the title says, I’ve not turned a bowl before but I at least know the concept and tips about those. Urns seem to be less prolific on YouTube

Since it is an urn, how ornate or simple are you wanting it to be? Like super elegant and classy, or possibly some other design element? In other words, are you trying to tailor it to the personality of the person who will be interned in it? where will it be displayed, a mantle or mausoleum or another location?

Long answer short, you would basically want to make a vase with a lid.I know you like to research via youtube videos like I do. Check out a couple of videos that show how a vase is made, then a couple making a lidded box and mash those 2 ideas together.

edit: tagging @scubatiffy27 as she also wants to make one of these one day.

Urns are generally a hollow vessel. whether a pet or person urn - there are is likely a volume requirement to ensure all the ashes, etc will fit. The last one I saw was shaped with a false top/stopper and hollowed from the bottom where a plug could then be added. this is just so no one tries opening the urn. cheers!

Alternately, a square gox urn is easy.

The general term for vase- or urn-like turning is “hollowing” or “turning a hollow vessel”. @willtooker (day maker) is probably the best member we have at this.
