My daughter has to submit a Science project for her school fair. Any suggestions?
Potato cannon. Combustion vs air pressure
This is kind of my teaching area… here are some ideas depending on interest that may/ may have not yet been covered in science class at that age:
Life Science: how many seeds are in different types of fruit (get a few different types of fruit, help cut open, count seeds). Can a plant grow in the dark or does it need light? (Grow 2 of the same, fast-sprouting plant such as Lima beens, one in a closet and one in the sun, water them the same for maybe a week).
Chemistry: How fast does ice melt in different temperatures? (Put one ice cube outside and one inside… can freeze lol-aid instead for visibility).
Physics: anything involving magnets is usually a hit with that age group… child can predict whether certain objects will be affected by a magnet or not and then test a few of them
May need to adapt for level slightly. Let me know if you have any questions… best of luck!
MRE (meal ready to eat) chemical heater bomb?
geodesic dome out of newspaper, strength of everyday materials
Important safety tip: In the state of Texas if you use compressed air - it’s a toy. If you use combustion - it’s a “zip gun” and is illegal.
Cop buddy of mine looked it up for me a few years back while we were building a device to deploy wire antennas for ham radio. Things could have changed of course.
What if it is neither - but still blows the bottom out of a 2L soda bottle?
Then you have a design problem…
What are they interested in? work with their interests
Wow.
