Yeah, silkscreening would be my go to suggestion for that. Or perhaps a laser and paint/ink application, using the laser to clear the top layer to give either paint or silkscreen ink something to adhere to. So, that would be taping off the area, rastering lightly and hitting it with a suitable paint or durable silkscreen ink before removing the tape. (letting the lasered tape act as a mask for you paint work) I’ve used this technique on leather that has already been sealed to good initial effect, but can’t speak to the level of durability that would be needed for a soccer ball that actually gets used.
