Any interest in bust or full length portrait scans or learning to edit?

Hi! My name is Bridget Ayres. I’m new (joined last night) and can contribute good quality portrait scans to anyone who’s interested/3D Fab. I did some looking about and haven’t seen much about scanning humans, mostly just objects. I have a Structure Sensor that fits on my iPad (actually, I can scan a whole room) and portable lighting equipment/turntable/everything necessary to scan DMS peeps. I did notice one bust in a display case up front. :). I use the Itseez 3D app and am willing to create a dedicated account for DMS scans.

I see classes using Sketchup, and others for Blender, but again, not dealing with humans. Is anyone interested in learning to use Autodesk Meshmixer for basic meshmixing and sculpting? You could use it to make yourself a personalized chess king or queen, or put bunny ears on yourself or put your head on … say … an old statue of Alexander the Great or the Venus de Milo, and all those skills transfer to other objects, silly stuff like replacing eight arms of an octopus with beefy human ones. I could also show people how to use Blender for editing portraits in color if there is interest.

Even if you don’t want to do anything with it, they’re fun to look at and you’re welcome to have a 3D scan of yourself!

This sounds awesome!

This would be wonderful. A class in Meshmixer is probably needed for sure.

@Haley_Moore and @JohnK have done 3D scanning of people at the space using the Cube Sense 3d scanner (I think the same type of sensor as the Structure) with pretty good results.

3D scanning classes would be totally welcome, if you need any help setting up a class or with 3D printing I’m willing to help.

Ok, I just hadn’t found any threads. I was figuring surely someone had scanned some people by now!
It would be great to have help setting it up (if interest is generated)!

I’d definitely like to see how the Structure sensor works.

I have seen using a Kinect and Reconstruct Me software too.

I teach classes on our NextEngine 3D scanner but that’s not really good for people and room scans.

We have talked about building a multi-camera rig for doing single moment 3D captures in 3D fab.

I started with a Kinect and Reconstruct Me and I can tell you that the Itseez 3D App with the Structure Sensor produces a much higher quality scan!
I’ve scanned a whole room a few times, though I don’t have a lot of experience with that and am certainly not an expert, but you’re welcome to play with it!

And yes, a photogrammetry rig would be great!

yes, very interested. My interest would be in learning what is needed to scan,
to actually do the scan to create a 3d model and use those in some woodworking projects that can
be cut on the CNC.

I don’t know a lot about CNC machines, for starters. If I knew what your end product was going to look like, I could tell you better. What I use is an iPad & a Structure Sensor. Depending on whether or not you want good color data, you may be able to get away without lighting. Depending on whether or not you have room to walk a complete circle around your subject and whether or not the above mentioned lighting is a factor and in place, you may or may not need a turntable. I would need to know more about what you’re scanning. Is it a person you want to scan?

yes, I want to scan a person. If the resulting scan can be converted to an STL or OBJ file,
it can be imported into the CNC software and cut. I do that same thing with a 3d scanner (like the NextEngine) which is all small scale. But I really want to do people. I’ve exprimented with the xbox kinect and some of the free software out there, but the quality was too poor.

Yes, the Kinect scans are not good quality. The Structure Sensor using the Itseez 3D app takes amazing quality scans!

Can you post some examples of stuff you scanned?

The Itseez App can be used for free for personal use, but if you use it commercially, there is a fee. I was an early adopter and was grandfathered in. I’m not sure what they charge now, but I do know I was required to purchase 200 scans up front and then each time I email myself an obj from my commercial account, money is deducted from my balance.

If I can figure out how, I’d love to post some screenshots of scans!

They look really good with textures. What about the raw mesh?

Wow that does look good. Yeah mouths and eyes don’t show well but that’s a pretty easy to do in meshmixer. It scans hair very well. It looks like it’s probably higher quality than the Cube Sense 3D scanner.

Here’s how she printed up!

Lol love the idea of using a Pop figure’s body for the 3D printed head.
