Someone has offered me a pint of Tetrahyrdofuran, which among other things makes a really great solvent for PLA. While I would certainly use it occasionally, I was wondering if the space might be interested, which would see it get more use.
Sounds good. When we ever get to dual extrusion it would work for PLA support material.
Can you make sure to get the material safety sheet for it too, we have a binder of material safety data sheets, with acetone, ABS, etc. I have a feeling this solvent is pretty caustic as well.
I can get the sds of we need it.
Apparently Tetrahydrofuran is more hazardous than MEK and Acetone. I would use caution if you were to use this stuff, and do not leave or use it in 3D fab. Use it in a well ventilated area in the workshop or outside.
Thanks for the offer @wandrson… Like @themitch22 mentions, it seems like it would be a bad idea to use inside - especially in a small room like the 3D Fab room. If you decide to bring it to the 'Space for others to use, please store it in the Yellow fire cabinet.
Also… Everyone ~ Please do NOT use it in the 3D Fab Room (or any of the rooms in the front office area of the 'Space). The rooms are not ventilated very well; and, it seems like it would be an unnecessary risk to take.
Thanks!
@themitch22 and @LisaSelk
I will make arrangement with the current owner of the chemical to deliver it to the yellow cabinet. Do the MSDS sheets need to be from the specific manufacturer of this particular chemical or will any MSDS for this chemical do? Also, where do the MSDS sheets get kept?
As to safety, I whole hearted concur that use of this chemical (and MEK and acetone) should only occur in a well ventilated area. I will further suggest that a chemical appropriate filter mask should be used with all three of these chemicals, particularly if they are being heated to surface treat 3d printed parts.
The company that sold the chemical does not appear to have MSDS sheets for their products online ( http://www.consolidated-chemical.com/Tetrahydrofuran-99-Reagent-1286.htm?productId=73 ) so I printed the MSDS for the chemical from another supplier and placed it in 3dFab on the bed of the mendel printer (only place I could see in there for it to be ‘safe’).
Yes on the MSDS sheet.
The MSDS Binder is in the kitchenette.
Thanks again Walter!
Like Robert said, the MSDS Binder is supposed to be in the kitchenette (the small sink in the front hallway) - out in the open where it can be easily seen. If the sheet is still on the printer when I get there tonight, I’ll place it in the binder.
