I find myself wondering what one is supposed to smash with this 24” x 5” chunk of wood.
I’m guessing food…

Sauerkraut requires smashing?.
I think it’s technically called “packing” when used in canning parlance, but I’m hardly what you’d call “learned” or “fluent” on that front…
Laundry? …
My Grandparents used one like it to mash (smash) potatoes.
That makes some sense. My grandmother had Discovered Technology. She mashed potatoes in her mixer.
Sauerkraut is ‘smashed” ‘with a muddler to help the salt breakdown the cabbage and release the juices to ferment it in.
Oh, wow!!
My great-grandmother used to have one of those. She would use it for everything from churning butter to mashing different fruits for jellies and jams, potatoes can corn to make tamales.
She would only get it out when large family dinners were being made around the holidays.
On the other hand, my great grandpa would get it out to mash grapes to make wine…
I need to make one! I wanna smash all kinds of stuff! Looks like it will help with stress
This should be the punishment for people who don’t wear a mask out in public these days
What is “the other side” of this tool?
I’m thinking “mortar and pestle”, right? Just a bit bigger…and wondering what the mortar is, typically, for such tasks as might require a 24" pestle…
To be completely honest, I never watch my great-grandmother use anything other than the large side, she always said that the ball on top was to keep her hands from coming off when they started to sweat.
Could you flip it over and use it for a giant pestle and mortar, probably but I would think it would be a little difficult to handle.
At first glance, it looked like an incomplete rolling pin. Then I saw the title and clicked to see more. I was surprised to read the dimensions. More lethal than a billy club or sap. Which was part of my reason for asking.
It’d be one scary nutcracker, huh?
Mmmm kraut
