Amateur Builder Questions

Hi Guys - just had a couple of quick questions regarding wood shop projects.

I saw there was some butcher block countertop in the woodshop (I think from IKEA?). I am about to start my first woodshop project soon - I am looking to build a coffee table for my house. Does anyone know if that butcher block is a good wood to use for that type of project? If not any recommendations for a better style of wood?

Follow up general question - I see there is an open build day in the wood shop on March 7th. Unfortunately I am going to be out of town that day - will there more open build days in the future? Seems like the perfect type of event for me to attend when I start my project.

As always thanks for the help!

We did indeed get it from IKEA. Its alright but its probably overkill for a coffee table unless that’s the look your going for. I don’t know how well it stains so I can’t speak to that. Another thing to think about is that it isn’t dead flat and will take some work to get it perfectly flat. If you want to see what it looks like with out any work done to them, just finish, check out the tables in room one. The tops that are in 3D fab were sanded and then finished with PolyAcrylic.

As for a better type of wood? That depends on the look you’re going for and your budget. If you don’t want the pre made butcher block there are so many woods to chose from, it really depends on the look you’re going for. If you want the butcher block look but a different wood you can check out Floor & Decor Sites-floor-decor-Site they have walnut, cherry, oak and maple.

The open build is the 7th AND 8th if that makes a difference. I am working on a bench and will be there both days.
As far as having them reoccur. That depends on a few things, so I can’t say for certain when it will happen again. If it does I will be sure to post something at that time.

Alex,

Thanks for pointing me towards Floor & Decor. I will check that out. When I
start the project I will just head to the shop on the weekend and I am sure
people will be there who can help me when I need it.
