Does Member #500 get anything special? I may delay joining if there’s prizes involved.

You get a free 10X10 and a 6 month headstart on that show.

I do not want to join Facebook and that seems to block some communicating.

I clicked on: Redirecting... and saw under “Events” that there were a number of classes scheduled that were not on the Dallas Makerspace events calendar. Example: “Jewelry and Small Metals Orientation” tomorrow Friday 1/13 @4:30.

I could not go any further because Facebook wanted me sign in.

Can we get the Dallas Makerspace Facebook pages accessible to all, even if they are not on Facebook?

Can we get events that are listed on Facebook to also be listed in the Dallas Makerspace Events Calendar?

You don’t need to join Facebook if you don’t want - it’s just another way of communication. I believe you’ll find they are both listed on the calendar and the Facebook as well for tomorrow at 6:30p.

@ 500 you attain “Cult Following” status emblem. Actually 500 is very impressive, it shows a wide following, would be interesting to know how many are non-DMS members.

If it’s a “public” group like the general CA one is, then anyone can view the main wall feed without joining fb. Access to files/calendar might require more. You may have to join the group to be able to post, regardless, but can certainly read it.

The calendar things mentioned are just Nicole finding classes on the dms calendar and posting an event to help get the word out. They’re always on dms calendar. The only exception could be an off-dms get together (like the thing to shop Scrap in Denton and grab lunch, dunno if that was on dms calendar but anything that’s a class would be). And some of us teachers post reminders for classes (and sometimes advance word or interest checks), but happening classes are always on calendar once the three days after submission happens (maybe that’s why you didn’t see one when you checked, if it hadn’t hit the calendar quite yet but we already knew the date)

If it’s a “closed” group then you need to join that group (and this fb) to view it.

I have several of the groups above (most active being Fiberholics) and have it set “closed” because some of us have projects that we’re working on as gifts or just hobby stuff and don’t want posts to also appear on personal wall feed (the way fb works with open groups). A closed group you have to join to view posts.

I know a big objection some have to fb is related to privacy and notifications. You CAN shut down your profile pretty tightly (and just don’t put anything a that personal to start), plus you can control notifications so nothing bugs you and then just go to groups you care about when you’re of a mind to. No biggie.

You can set up a basic profile with an email and use a different name too (just don’t do overtly fake name ir fb will shut it down).

One note, even if profile shut down pretty completely, I recommend letting your groups or mutual friends or interests or a note or something show because most admins (me included) will check your profile to see if you’re a troll before letting you in. Basically I look to see if they seem to be a real person versus a fake profile with a couple of pics and that’s it. If I see makery interests/groups, or mutual friends, or they live in this area, nearly anything (low bar) then I’ll let them in. So include a TEENSY amount of info showing, but it’s not like you need to put your laundry out ther or worry about notification pestering you. You can totally control that.

alright! I’m in !

Fb has been a fabulous resource for additionally promoting classes, reminders, gauging interest, collaborating on new class ideas, sharing ideas found in the Wild (other parts of fb). I think it was a big part of what helped me get traction when building the Fibers program at dms. Great resource.

The other cool thing is I’m pretty sure my Fiberholics group picks up folks searching “Makerspace” or “fiber” and I’ve got a little chunk of folks from one in Louisiana that lemminged over, plus a bunch of fiber folks that aren’t even Makerspace (local and all over) so while the core activity is regulars with our local DMS fibers folks, we gain great input from a wider community too. Very cool.
