Air Compressor installation 11-4-23

Well guys, the time has come. We are going to be changing out the air compressor tomorrow. The intent is to keep the downtime minimal. At some point the air will be down, but it should be minimal since we are staging the new air compressor & running while remove the old air compressor

I’ll be in most all day. Let me know if you need an extra pair of (unskilled) hands…

Thanks for doing this Tim. What can you tell us about the new compressor?

The most important word to know is S C R E W
Second most important to know is Tim Approved

but yeah, not a lot of meat in that doc. Nice specs that ARE in there, though. This is VERY EXCITING!

It is a variable speed screw so it should be able to turn down to meet demand. We also took it up from 15 hp to 20 since the price difference was not significant and we didn’t have to change any wiring/breakers. That little extra gives us IIRC like another 37 cfm over the older one.

Well all this is fully completed. Thanks to @Paul_Morley, @BobKarnaugh , @Mrholthaus , @artg_dms , @jphelps & @procterc for help getting this done.

We set the new air compressor outside the room temporarily. We then removed the old air drier, then the old air compressor.

@artg_dms replaced the lights in there. @jphelps replaced the ceiling tiles. We all cleaned the floor & walls. We then painted the room. Turned the temporary setup off & then moved the new wire compressor into the room on my machine skates.

I don’t think i’m exagerating when I say this was the most well executed project I’ve participated in over the years. Wouldn’t have been possible without the great planning by @TBJK as usual.

It was an amazing collaboration of people and skills. It’s so much fun to participate in these sorts of events. It’s easily one of my favorite things to do at DMS. It’s not for everyone but it’s very gratifying to improve the place we all love.

One footnote that may not be so obvious. In the next to the last pic you can spot the metal skates the Tim designed and fabricated. We lowered the compressor onto them and rolled it into place with ease. Was even able to steer them to make the corners etc. I think those skates need to go into the DMS hall of fame!!!. @TBJK, post a couple of pics in this thread it you don’t mind.

Here are the skates we used to wheel the compressors in & out with.

Wow! This is absolutely awesome. Thanks to all of you for making this possible.

How often do the filters need to be changed?

So how dry is the air from this system expected to be compared to the previous set up?

Not quite sure. Ideally should be dry. The filters have been acting up a little bit here lately. However this machine will allow us to easily drop the pressure on the tank(it is still a wet tank) to allow us to easily bypass the filters/regulator to perform the maintenance on said filters. The Quincy was not easy to change the pressure settings for the cycling. This made servicing the filters more difficult without over pressurizing the down stream system.

I forgot to mention, this thing is quiet. Sounds like a Festool sander.
