Advice wanted on building a steel-capable CNC router

I’d like to build a CNC router similar to our MultiCam router but capable of cutting steel.

My first version will have 3 axes and a working volume of 48" x 24" x 12".

It will have a flood coolant system like our HAAS mill, so all parts should be rust-resistant steel such as 316 stainless.

Chris W. recommended the Dynomotion motor controller so I plan to use their KFLOP and KSTEP products to drive some NEMA 34 stepper motors.

I ordered some 1500 mm linear guides from Anaheim Automation (CPC-AR15N-1500-30-30) and am very impressed…

I was about to purchase all the linear guides, ball screws, etc. from Anaheim Automation. But first I should ask DMS for advice on buying the following items:

  • linear guides (rails)
  • ball screws
  • spindle which I might occasionally swap out with a laser or plasma cutter
  • 0.0005" linear encoder (position feedback) on the three axes similar to our Bridgeport mill
