Due to the new rule posted on TALK this morning, at 9:30 AM I notified everyone registered for my Essential Oils class (11:30 AM) that it cancelled:
The new rule includes the prohibition of possessing intoxicating substances on DMS property.
My class uses Everclear in the distillation process.
I understand there may be something else I can use For the liquid, , but I read the rule post about 23 minutes after it appeared on TALK and I didn’t have no time to make a change.
I understand that use of Everclear may be something that can be an exception, but there was no time to request one, and I don’t intend to request and exception.
I also understand the idea of “Ask forgiveness later” in case I could get an exception. For me, that doesn’t apply to DMS.rules. We run into problems when we go, “I think it’s ok in THIS case.
I understand that some may think I should have done this differently. I’m not interested in discussing it.
Sorry … the rule doesn’t limit it to consumable alcohol.
The possession or consumption of alcohol, illegal drugs, or other intoxicating substances is prohibited anywhere on or within the premises, parking lot, or common walkways of the Dallas Makerspace.
I think it’s fair to assume the rule covers substances one can consume without becoming blind or dead. If not, there is a whole lot of paint, glue, brake cleaner, gasoline, etc. that need to get moved out forthwith.
Edit: I see that you probably mean that there is no qualifier on the alcohol. But there is - the rule backreferences the alcohol as an intoxicating substance.
What happens if you try to run the soxhlet equipment with water like the basic distillation class? Not as effective, I’m sure, but I’m curious.
I have a bunch of rosemary i brought in to try a couple of weeks ago, but i had forgotten the Everclear and had trouble figuring out where to set up and where everything was. I may or may not have been waiting until you ran the class again
I’m in town on weekends, so will be testing another liquid next Saturday, because I want to get another class scheduled. If you’re free and want to join me, we could try the rosemary. I appreciate your interest!
No one on the BoD is trying to shut down a class that happens to use Ethanol for a solvent or a cleaner. It is the consumption/ingestion that is the problem.
Of course they aren’t, but the rule itself is a rule and must be followed until it’s wording is updated to what it was meant to be and not what it is currently.
Tommy waltzing down the hall with a 5th of Everclear, and Nick doing the same with a Stella isn’t any different from the current standing of the rules.
I guess something went down that required a rule to support the actions of the BOD to pass this. BOD, I’d suggest sharing the larger situation as it will likely bring light to the need for this rule.
All that said, is procession a needed function of the rule? Is procession really our concern? I would guess our issue is the consumption of intoxicants while at or using our facilities. By simply removing the procession clause, we no longer run into the many of the acceptable uses while still not allowing the risk case for which I would guess was the issue by which the rule was made.
