5" x 5" inexpensively

Hi wood experts,
Looking to make close to 80 5"x5" (or 6"x6" roughly) wood pieces for a project at a title 1 school. So where should I look for wood? (Cheap would be good since I will fund it). Doesn’t have to be fancy wood, they will just need them to keep their ceramic pieces flat.
Thank you

How thick do you want it to be?

Do you want a smooth finish?

How much work are you willing to do beyond cutting to size?

Thank you for asking, between 1/4 and 1" should work for this. Don’t want them to get splinters, so smoothish.

I have some old shelves made from pine. Has some knots in it. Each shelf is 46 1/2 x 11 1/2 x 3/4. They would each yield 18 squares 5 1/4 in, so at least 5. I can donate 7 of these to you. I can bring them Tuesday afternoon for you to look at.

Thank you!
That could work.
Sent pm.

It’s ok if different wood is used, i.e. sourced from various people?

Yes certainly!

Any help is appreciated, many of them should be starting their project this week.

Wow, thank you to Mr. Blatz who already knocked out 67 of these! Only need 12 more to cover the whole class.

Will you be putting wet clay on it? If you want something that won’t warp there is light weight plastic similar to coroplast but much flatter and stiffer, used for making signs. Bubble-X and Titan are two tradenames I remember, I made a bike shipping box from 4mm Bubble-X. I have some small samples I could bring in monday or wednesday night.

Yes, there will be some moisture in the clay when they first work on these. Sounds interesting, would like to check out those samples. Thank you

Randy,
Sounds interesting, could come to DMS Monday or Wednesday after 6 pm, let me know what would work for you.

Thank you,
Anette

I will be there both nights, less busy on monday

Ok, cool, I’m at the DMS now

Thank you @hforsberg , @mblatz and @rlisbona all set:)
