How big is the 3D scanner? Is it big enough to scan a man’s foot?
It can definitely scan something the size of a man’s foot! The set-up would be a little different than the default, though… There are tutorials directly in the software that you can check out.
The main thing will be keeping the foot absolutely immobile for the duration of the scan…
Hopefully someone with experience scanning body parts and/or larger than the default scan area parts will chime in with some tidbits of actual experience, pro-tips, etc…
The next engine could scan a foot but you will have to have the foot placed at the right distance from the scanner. It gives you the ideal distance based on which lens you select (macro, wide, extended). Like Lisa said its definitely sensitive to movement so maybe it would be better to make an impression of the foot in clay and scan the impression. It depends on what you are doing.
There’s also 123D Catch which is a free autodesk app for your phone that could get decent results.
Well, you asked.
My wife makes slippers. Nice slippers. More like boots. Made of wool. They are toasty warm. And durable (they consistently outlast my shoes). I’m wearing a pair right now. Did I mention they’re nice?
The slippers are “felted”. A process that involves shrinking. A process that is significantly more art than science.
The latest pair she made for me shrunk too much. Which, in general, is not a terrible loss because we have friends with smaller feet than mine. So someone else will get the slippers.
But I don’t get them. Which brought up the idea of using lasts. The idea is to put a last inside a slipper then felt which should cause the slipper to form to the last. If it goes well the result will be a perfectly sized slipper.
But, lasts are kind of expensive. And, some (most?) will not survive the clothes washer (felting).
Which brought up the next idea of making lasts. I am a member of the World’s Greatest Makerspace after all! Scanning my feet seems like a good place to start. With a 3D model I should be able to make lasts out of nearly anything.
Thanks! We will give that a spin!
You could make a plaster cast of your foot, then scan that. Much easier to make a plaster lump stay still.
