3D printed bones

Hands look awesome. I can imagine them either on top left and right sides near the front or on the two diagonal supports for front wheel. Or maybe not symetrical placement. We’ll probably need some single sections with a bone end and 6" tapered grip section. We will be working on the coffin wednesday nights and most sat afternoons and sunday nights till the race. Do we need to order more white filament?

Tomorrow sept 18 we will be working on brakes, adding a few diagonal braces, adding a push bar, and taking it for a few parking lot test runs. Still need to clean the flux off before powdercoating but we are getting close to that stage.

I think @CaryF300 has been printing it using his own personal filament so I’m sure we at least need to replace that.

And if we print it in Bubba (probably necessary), I suspect we don’t have any white ABS.

You said you want some straight bones, which I’ll call inline bones, to place along some TBD number of pipes.

I think you said “about 6 inches”. This happens to be 7.1".

Is this the sort of thing you’re looking for? And if so, do you favor option 1 or option 2?

Match the U mounting shape of the rest of the bones and add a knuckle to one end. Knucke end doesnt need to be that big. Like maybe 1.5-2". Would need a flat area under the knuckle in case it is on top of a braze joint. I’m flying to phoenix, could talk after about 10am today

EDIT: OK, this is what I modeled. Knee and ankle “knuckles” on the tibia. Front side only. Left and right modeled but only RHS shown.

Note that these are knuckles from opposite ends of the same bone. They are not a mating pair.

Do you happen to know where to find the bones that have already been printed?

I’ve left them all with the frame in the Metal Shop.

Yeah they are in a bucket by the frame last I saw them.

Thanks. The frame keeps migrating around …

Is this the bucket you mean, or is it just further into the corner?

I think so. I’ll be up tomorrow to clean the frame and maybe test the wrap so I can take a look.

Thanks.

If you do that, could you please put a note in the bucket that says something like … Coffin Racer Parts (NOT TRASH). They take a really long time to print and I’d hate for them to disappear.

Did you bring these? I couldn’t find them in the bucket. Thx.

@CaryF300 Will and I bumped into Stephen Hatalla @SHatalla tonight. He can help print the rest of the bones but would need to get checked out on the Bambu printers.

Do we need to order filament to replace any of your personal filament and have enough to make the rest of the bones?

We do have white ABS plastic in the makerspace stash, I printed an unrelated part tonight using it.
I’ll need to know the procedure for billing filament use toward a project for the department rather than personal use, but I’m excited to start working on this!

@SHatalla if you are making a part for a makerspace committee project just use the filiment and no need to make a donation. We dont bill between committees.

Understood, thank you!

Accurate … but it’s a nice courtesy to let the committee chair know about it - especially if it’s a fair amount of filament like these will be.

@Keith … FYI. Do you need us to order some more filament for the committee?

@SHatalla - Thanks very much for working on these. There is a spreadsheet in the committee drive that has an inventory of what we have and what we need. Please feel free to update it as you print things. The inventory sheet doesn’t happen to mention this, but most joints are comprised of two parts so that they can be printed flat on the build plate.

@SHatalla - The hands (once I get the models finished) will have to be printed on Bubba.

Ah, understood. Bubba is down right now, the print head isnt holding heat.
I’ll check with 3dfab to find out when they expect to have it back up.
Thank you!

Hey,
If you’re going to be printing a lot, please do order your own filament. We only keep a very small amount of white on hand, and we don’t usually keep colors other than orange, that white is left over from another project.

Yes, you’ll need to get checked out on the Bambuu. Jim and Max are both teaching so there’s usually a class every week or so (though Jim was out sick this weekend).

We are waiting on parts for Bubba and don’t have a firm ETA. Sorry about that. But if you’re in a hurry you might be able to use our new “conveyer belt” style printer. It’s not super wide, but you can do “infinite Z” prints, so something like an long arm might be fine. You should talk to Jim about that.

Hope that helps!
Keith
