This is on my radar.
I have always liked those vacuformed topo maps, but they were expensive, and fragile, being generally found in the gift shops of visitor centers and museums, I never took the risk that they would not survive the trip home.
Some years ago, there was a 3D map at the visitor center of the Painted Desert/Petrified Forest National Park created by laminating topo maps onto cardstock and cutting them along the contour lines, then stacking and gluing.them. My current thought is to scan the map and use a laser to do the cutting.
