Huh. Anyone got suggestions of best beginner knife steel? Want to make a couple of kiradashis, all stock removal (no forging yet), but would like to quench with refractory cement for a hamon line…
Are saw blades too thin. Used circular saw blades are high grade steel.

1080,1084,1095 (higher number means more carbon. More carbon means stronger but more brittle finished product).
All can be heat treated with an oil quench.
None are stainless, so can rust if left wet/stored in a humid environment.
Online metals and metal supermarkets are both local sources. Amazon and eBay might yield better pricing at the cost of longer shipping times.
If you can buy annealed metal it is “presoftened” for easier working. If not, you should anneal it before grinding for easier/faster work. The induction forge and a bucket of gardening vermiculite will work for annealing.
