Look for programs on local boards that convert DFW.BBS to dialing directory
format. PQCONV.ARC handles QMODEM and PROCOMM. GT-DFW.ARC handles GT POWER
COMM. Any more available?

We are having trouble with copies of this list floating around long after it's
out of date. Destroy any BBS list that is more than 90 days old. We will verify
many of these boards weekly. Sysops: please get a new list at least once each
month by calling Dallas RBBS-PC to read Bulletin 1. Anyone can leave feed-back
about this list in a comment to sysop on 931-8073 - provided they use their
REAL names and call at 1200 or 2400 Baud. (We've had some real creeps at 300).

Lol. I get a blank look when I mention I met my husband when BBS’s roamed the earth (met him on one). Sigh… very rarely someone actually knows what it is :stuck_out_tongue:

It is this time of year that I think back to that most excellent ANSI Christmas tree I once saw in my youth, glowing out at me from my CGA monitor. Magical times…

I was the System Operator (SYSOP) for the RailNet Bulletin Board System (BBS) in the DFW area for many years. This BBS was the main link between 22+ Model Railroad Clubs in the DFW area. All club meetings and activities were posted with the ability to share pictures and construction articles. I used the Wildcat! BBS software. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wildcat!_BBS The system was operated out of my home using a super fast 9600 baud modem and a dedicated Metro telephone number. Does anybody remember Metro phone numbers" They allowed toll free calls between the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. There was no paid advertisement content, this was my attempt to bring computer access to the local model railroading community. This was back in the late 1980’s time frame, way before the Internet existed.

I first got on the Internet in 1983. It has been around since the 70’s but generally you needed a government or academic account to get on it. Long before BBS’ there was USENET…

Apparently, once again I was wrong. BBS’s started in the 73, while usenet apparently didn’t start until 80

I used to set Telemate to dial my favourite (… really? I thought it was spelled ‘favorite’ … must have a British dictionary installed) list of BBSes, slide into bed for the night, and wake up when I heard modem connection tones. Ahhh, memories …

I used to be a member of MCP/MIG (Metroplex CP/M Interest Group) back in the day…

If y’all do this on a Friday night or over the weekend, I’d def try to come!

300 baud rate, and no need to hand the telephone receiver on the unit, this speed demon hooked directly to the phone line!! Brilliant! To think of all the games I was able to download for free. For an 8 year old kid, I was evidently suiting up for a life in technology…

I never was able to hack into the missile defense system, thus I never in actuality encountered the phrase:

“Would you like to play a game?”

Good, because we now have a Chromecast of our own.

Vicmodem was amazing for its era. Personally I liked the Hayes and my later intel fax 14.4k modem.
