Is there an 11 by 17 capable printer at DMS? No need for color or special paper. Just one page.
If there is, should I bring paper?

There is an Epson 2200 photo printer that is wide enough for 11x17. It’s in creative arts room and needs the drivers installed. Last time I used it, it streaked a little, I’m not sure if it has been cleaned of cartridges replaced since then. As far as I know we only have 8.5x11 photo glossy paper, and of course the 24" wide format printer could be used for 11x17, there’s a class @pandabob is teaching Wed night how to use it.
Thank you for the reply!
What needs the drivers installed? The computer I would use for printing?
The class is for the wide format printer not for the Epson 2200, correct? Or do I need to take a class to use the Epson 2200?
Class is for the larger wide format, not the 2200 you can use the smaller printer without a class. You will need to install the epson 2200 driver on the art computer to use it.
Got it. Thanks.
(and a few extra characters to sate the Discourse beast)
@pandabob and I are discussing the options with the Epson. Seeing as the big mama can take on 11x17 paper just the same we’re not entirely sure it’s place right now.
Thank you for the reply!
Don’t keep it around on my behalf. I found out this evening I can get a black-and-white print from Office Depot for 20¢ / page. It looks like I can even order the print through their website then pick it up at the closet store.
It is strange world in which ordering a print over the internet is more convenient and cheaper than using an actual printer.
It actually isn’t all that strange. It has always been less expensive for print houses to print items than for individuals to print items. The cost of ink is outrageous!
I try to print as much as I can at Sam’s Club, or Kinkos. However, they won’t print nudes, which I have been known to shoot. Indeed, I need someone to help me set up the large-format printer so I can try printing a life-sized nude.
I like to make it a point to discover one new thing about Richard every day…looks like I can check off today :–)
I’m flattered. I’m really boring.

Let me offer that there’s a big difference between a black only laser print
vs large format inkjet and archival inkjet printing In terms of cost. Toner
is way cheaper per sq ft. We have some nice laser printers but I’m not sure
they take anything bigger than legal sized paper. Even between inkjet and
archival inkjet there’s a big difference. The two Epson printers have
archival pigment inks and will be more expensive than laser and standard
inkjet but are much higher quality and last a lot longer. The HP that we
now have is standard inkjet and will be cheaper. I don’t have a final
number yet but I’m hoping to have it at $1 per linear ft of 36" wide paper
which should bring it inline with that $0.50 price you paid at Kinkos.
I don’t print very much large-format stuff, so the prices I pay aren’t reflective of that. However, it’s well-known in computer magazines that home printers cost two or three times (or more) as much as the print shop. Most people don’t price their home prints per page, or they would be shocked.
For example. An 11x14 poster at Walmart.com is about $7. A 24x36 print on
the 7880 at DMS (with nicer paper) is about $6 in materials.
I would expect that our large-format printer would break the trend, as we are using the same equipment as the print shops would be using. The reason the print shops could offer lower prices on their printing than home printers would cost is the print shops use different technology.
Thanks for the price comparison.
The epson 7880 prints at those prices is definitely a treasure to have at the 'space. We thank you, Steve, for running it.
