Transmission 4R100 & rebuild

I got the band as well, It is in another bag. There is only one band, Intermediate band.

So the 15th I started working on pulling my transmission. When I drained my fluid it was darker than I remembered. Well the rain got in the way over the past week, I worked Saturday, decided yesterday I should take a lazy day. Tonight I removed the transmission after removing the exhaust downpipe from the turbo, My arms were too big to fit. Got the transmission and transfer case off. I have to say I hate the design that they did with the crossmember. What a fantastic idea to have the cross member hold the transfer case and nothing on the transmission. That would have made things about an hour quicker had it been the other way around. The next non-rainy/non-cold day I’ll pull it from underneath the Excursion.

I know you are full into this rebuild now, but I had similar symptoms on a Ford Sportrac. With slipping and OD blinking. After doing some research on this particular tranny, I learned that this particular one has a problem with a gasket blowing out between a valve body shim and the case due to the valve body screws loosening. I decided to check it out. So I purchased new valve body gaskets and a new filter and pan gasket. Turned out the gasket had blown through causing pressure drops and some of the valve body screws were loose enough I could back them off with my fingers. So I replaced them and tightened each valve body screw to recommended sequence and ft/lbs and sure enough problem has been solved.

The boys obviously take after their dad. Aren’t you glad you bought that comfortable couch?

I thought I recognised that table…

For disassembling the trans or for doing it on the kitchen table?

I wouldn’t even dare do it inside the house.

Tim,

Just curious if your kids tried out the MREs yet?

Not yet. I’m going to this weekend or week. I didn’t want to give it to them yet until I knew they could burn the energy off. My two boys after they eat get extremely active.

Once the the transmission is off the table - you could opt for fine dining of an MRE by chem light for you and your wife!

Anything pertaining to moderate amounts of loose automatic transmission fluid. So not sure what that takes off the table for you, but indoor transmission work at home is out of bounds for me.

Lol, I have OSB & Cardboard on the table. Kitchen table is probably the best place for me to do the transmission work. Transmissions are really finicky about dust, dirt & debris. That’s actually one of the reasons I’m doing this at home. I can control the environment, I cant control the environment at the space. Someone could go directly next to me at another table & do any activity that could cause foreign debris. The way I sold it to my wife is, Do you want me re-doing this in a short period because the environment?

The transmission shops I have seen in the past have a separate room where the transmissions are rebuilt.

Anyone have any luck sourcing Merton V? I’m going to try Napa in the morning. Then if not, the dreaded dealer.

Downside is that’s a quart. I need 17.7 quarts. I’m looking for gallon or 5 quart jugs. My Oreilly’s had just a few of the quarts.

How soon do you need it? My brother is a manager of a transmission shop in the Lewisville area.

Did you ask for cases? We usually bought by the case…
And I assume you already know Amazon alleges to have Motorcraft 5qt jugs…
