November Sewing SIG meeting notes

Great meeting last night, thanks to all that attended!

In attendance:
Matt Hawes (I didn’t see him sign in though)
@uglyknees
@MizGeek
@BarkingChicken
Megan Peters
@Cairenn_Day
@sinless
@sewwhat
@dianarhodes

A few others popped in and out as well, including @dryad2b and @malcolmputer and @Hardsuit and Astrud (Paul and Astrud shared a lot of helpful info on running classes and the open sewing day, among other things)

Here’s a link to the slides - https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1vqZSUctieeazTftk6oU61OCSxwI5ZiXBJ706jK_F0GM/edit?usp=sharing

The main purpose of this meeting was to get everyone together and discuss ideas and makes plans for building more of a sewing community in DMS.

To start, we unanimously voted to propose at the CA meeting tonight that CA purchase a Thor GA441 cylinder arm leather sewing machine. If approved, I will put up a train the trainer class ASAP and we will discuss on talk the rules for use with the machine, as well as curriculum for the instructor class.

We talked about future machine purchases and where we want to go as a SIG and eventually as a committee

Shay and others spoke on quilting (They may have been speaking in tongues, I dunno) but we eventually voted that quilting would remain part of the sewing SIG for the time being, but as we gain more capabilities and built a community, we will want to split it off into its own SIG

Lots of project classes were discussed, aside from what I mentioned in my slide deck, some of the ideas were
Christmas/holiday ornaments, stockings, etc.
Sashes (I don’t know how this one is spelled @Hardsuit)
Tailoring pants, jackets, shirts, etc.
Pet placement mats
Wallets
Basic clothing modification
Making custom pressing jig things @sinless can speak more on this
A how to press class

I will also have put up a calendar class/how to develop curriculum and lead a class workshop for CA/sewing so we can get a lot of ideas together and start developing new classes

Sew serious (working title) is the open sewing day we will be hosting, the first one is happening on Sunday, November 18th at 1 PM until 5 PM, come and go as you please.

We also decided to institute a multi layer system to stop people from using fabric scissors. As we will be getting the best fabric scissors (KAI) we will have to guard them from abuse. Firstly, a rule change where using the fabric scissors for non-fabric things means you buy us a new set. These scissors will be very clearly marked (with a hanging luggage tag essentially) that identifies them as such, they will be “somewhere” in the sewing room. We will leave some scissors by the door for people to grab that do not incur this penalty. And the warning will be written all over the place.

We also discussed some basic things we want to buy for the sewing SIG, but most of the things we really want to have will have to wait until after we can put it behind the great quilt wall of the sewing room to prevent supplies from… going on a walkabout.

I’d like to hear everyone’s recommendation for feet that we can add to the existing machines with links (please!), as we discussed what we wanted to get.

We’ll hopefully see everyone at the sew serious meetup!

We also may have a proximity alarm so if they scissors leave the sewing room an alarm blares

I didn’t even make the pop-in list? If I had feelings, they’d be hurt! :wink: So happy to see how this group is evolving! Leather has a vested interest in this new equipment!

The two little Janomes?

All of them! I am trying to find a darning/free motion foot for the Pfaff 130. With its feed dog disengagement knob it very quickly converts to free motion quilting/embroidery.

I was trolling Ebay for additional bobbins for the Pfaff this morning, and may have found a walking foot that will work as well.

I have a buddy who is a certified Pfaff repair guy with a hoard of Pfaff parts. I’ll ask him if he has a darning foot that would fit. If not, you could probably get the low shank “big foot” to work.

And this was on ebay - https://www.ebay.com/itm/OPEN-TOE-DARNING-QUILTING-FREE-MOTION-FOOT-Pfaff-Hobby-130-340-382-521-P60430/390524775891?hash=item5aed172dd3:g:88gAAOxyxpxQ7cy6:sc:USPSFirstClass!75042!US!-1:rk:1:pf:0
And these come up under a search for “low shank” darning foot:

For the Janome’s, there’s this info on the Janome website:

darning foot -https://www.janome.com/accessories/sewing-machine-feet/darning-foot/
free motion foot (alternate to darning foot) -https://www.janome.com/accessories/sewing-machine-feet/free-motion-quilting/
convertible free motion foot set (kind of a combo of the above, as near as I can tell)
https://www.janome.com/accessories/sewing-machine-feet/convertible-freemotion-/
Of the two, I would likely lean more toward the darning foot, as it would help hold down the batting under the needle, whereas the free motion foot looks more like an embroidery foot.

or https://www.janome.com/accessories/sewing-machine-feet/convertible-even-feed-foot-set/

One of my favorite feet (other than quarter inch and free motion options) is an open-toe embroidery foot. Basically, it has a gap between the sides of the feet, so you can see where the needle is going. I use for paper piecing, straight line machine quilting, using decorative stitches for embellishment, etc.

As to acquisition locations for Janome feet, while they may be available on Amazon or Ebay, a local dealer can get anything you want. put an appropriate zip code in the search field, and you’ll see everything nearby. https://www.janome.com/find-a-dealer/
