New Knifemaking page on the Wiki

I took the liberty of creating a Knifemaking page on the Wiki as a home for the Knifemaking SIG.

https://dallasmakerspace.org/wiki/Knifemaking

It’s very basic and could use some additional flushing out.

Have at it

Group-edit collaboration are what Wikis are for.

I added to the page a list of everyone I found on TALK who said “I’m interested”, “I’d like to make one”, or similar. Below is the complete list. If I missed someone or you’d rather NOT be listed on the Wiki, you can edit the page yourself, or drop me a PM and I’ll do it for you.

Members showing an interest in the Knifemaking SIG include:

I have free mesquite scales if anyone needs some.
I cut down my own trees and most material that size is no use to me.
Though I would like to learn how to make throwing knives.
I never carry one cause I am a danger to myself with sharp objects. LOL.

Thanks for setting this up! I’ll add some stuff when I get a chance

I’m well away from actually needing scales for anything, I am a sucker for mesquite handles though if you’ve got any left after people who will use them in the next five years get some, haha. Or did you mean you want to actually give them to the sig to have on hand and out of your storage?

I can give them to the sig. I do some resawing.
Let me know some sizes and I will produce some for give a ways.
It is easy for me and I have not made knives. I actually throw away
anything smaller than 2 x 2".

Let me know some sizes you might want personally.
I love to give wood away. Like a arborSanta.

Added a section for links to YouTube channels that focus on cool/educational/inspirational knifemaking and tweaked a couple words here and there, most important being changing “leather working sig goals” to “knifemaking sig goals” :joy::wink: it’s quite a pain to edit on my phone though so that’s it for now. It would be good to get a gallery going at some point but I don’t know that I’ll have time this next week. If people want to pm pics of their work though, I can work on it when I get a chance

Since it was an orphan page, I linked to it from the Blacksmith committee page and back to the Blacksmith committee page from it.

FWIW, the wiki page is for Blacksmith committee, so if someone searches the wiki for BlacksmithING committee they won’t find much. If someone wants to set up a page for Blacksmithing committee and redirect to the Blacksmith committee page … please do so.

Yeah, I cribbed the layout from the leatherworking SIG page.

I was pretty sure that’s what happened

O I believe @Lordrook was interested in the sig as well, at least he was at the meeting. Thanks @jeffbob I guess if anyone more well versed in scales has suggestions that would be great @Team_Blacksmithing probably has some input.

you should save those little scraps for smoker wood chips

I’m in the process of cutting down 50 small mesquites out in Quinlan.
Just keeping 8" or bigger. The chip thing is a good idea but labor to
make them is too much for this old man…LOL

Hi Jeff,

I’m very much interested in obtaining some mesquite for pen making, knife scale making and even bowl making. I’m in Flower Mound.

If you have anything that you think might be suitable for any of these projects, I’d happily take you up on your offer.

I would definitely be glad to take some as well, I don’t have any sizes in mind and I don’t want to make more work for you so if you have just scraps in general what ever you want to give since I turn as well would be greatly appreciated

Scott,

Knife scales and pen blank material can be had.
The bowl blanks are for sale. They are way too much work for me
to give them away. Do you have a box at the Space? I should be coming
down in the next week of so and could drop some off for you.

I harvest all my own trees and the procurement of these have a lot of
time and money involved. On the smaller pieces I would not end up
using them and selling them, at this point is not an option. Just giving them
away to a good home. Kind of like animal rescue without the effort.
Wood rescue…
