Getting Rid of Old Paint

Curiosity got the better of me.
Seems like there should be a thing to do with old paint, rather than drying out 1/2 full cans.
So I googled.
Anybody know anything about this, or other similar re-users of products often wasted?

Back in the day, model railroaders were known to take in unwanted earth tones, for base coating the landscaping…

There’s actually a very simple way to handle paint and other chemicals:

  1. You bring it to the Space each day you come here to use it for your project.
  2. You take it away with you when you leave each day.

The Space has no storage or disposal issues. You take don’t make your problem of disposal that of others.

It may come as a surprise, but some people have leftover paint at their houses and don’t know what to do with it…

I have always thought this approach to getting rid of your waste paints and other chemicals to be more environmentally friendly

At least one city run hazardous wast program will only take oil based product, not latex. For latex, they direct you to either dry it, or apparently you can buy a catylist that will cause the paint to solidify when stirred in, and then the latex is just trash. Oil based, they prefer you take to the hazardous waste collection.

I have a box of household chemicals I am trying to figure out what to do with. City of Carrollton recommends a waste management inventory, coordination and pickup. I really just want to drive it somewhere and responsibly drop it off.

For the residents of Plano:

You can even drop off used motor oil and tires:

“Most cities” host “roundup days”, usually in Spring, where they allow residents to drop off “icky stuff”.
I don’t know Carrollttonn does that, or not, but those I’ve been part of usually send notification to residents via their garbage bill or similar…

If you live in Dallas County, take it to the site on Plano Road just north of the DART train tracks (north of LBJ). Here’s their web site http://www.dallascounty.org/department/plandev/hhw_intro.php… and I just noticed that Carrollton isn’t on their list. :frowning:

Carrollton used to - And I have inquired about it. But they don’t do that anymore since they have a “pick up service”. Feh…

And wouldn’t you know it, I live up on the Denton side of Carrollton.

Lol. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. I’d rather go to Denton County jury duty than Dallas County.

I wonder… can a block of activated and hardened latex paint be put on the lathe and shaped? Could be an interesting art piece of blended colors and a shape that could be thought provoking.

Dunno on the first.
I think this addresses it on the second:

Fordite is enamel paint based and is much harder than latex.

When I sold my home I had tons of finishes I didn’t want to store. I just put it on Craig’s list and another woodworker came and took it. Included 6 gallons of poly that would have cost a to dispose of.

If I end up with paint, I am hoping to find someone that can use it
I know that at one time, there were groups that used it for covering
graffeti I was also thinking about Craigs list or any of the several
local buy sale groups I am in on FB

If wood shop will allow it … but not Machine Shop.
