Epson 9600 to Sublimation printer?

Do you guys think that it would be possible to frankenstien an Epson 9600 into a sublimation printer? Possibly even extend the print area to 60" linear inches? If so, is anyone up for the project? I’ll donate it if its totally feasible both economically and logistically. I think that being able to print your own fabric is something that should totally be available to DMS.

I would LOVE to be able to essentially print my own fabric. Conde has a video on an Epson 9700 being used as a dye sub printer, would take more research on the 9600, however the issue is the heat press for prints that large.

That is very true. If one can be found for cheap enough I’d be willing to donate some money to get it. What if we combine the forces of DMS and get electronics, welding and anyone specializing in autocad to create this beast?

From an ooooohh aaaaaaah standpoint:
OOOOOOOOOOOOH AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

It would be super kewl to have a wide format dye sub printer at the 'Space!

Of course, as already mentioned - we would need a heat press that could accommodate the large - prints… which would probably be the largest hurdle - due to money and space available to store the larger equipment…

At any rate, I am curious to see what our resident Dye Sub Specialist (@CaryF300) and our resident Printer Fixer (@pandabob) have to say about the potential…

A quick search on Google pulled up three articles from the same forum. One of the articles had a response from Conde ~ so there’s that… The articles have some good points to consider…

From all aspects it would be great. Cosplayers would love it, as well as the sewing folks. Don’t like the fabric choices, dye sub your own. Could also turn out some interesting wall paper I’d imagine. @uglyknees take note, I’m not the only loony wanting something like this

@CaryF300 @pandabob you guys are our resident experts. What do you know?

Ps space. Where could we find the space?

I’ve never done any large-format dye sub. Just looking at the presses on Conde’s web site I found the following.

George Knight manual press with 26" x 32" heat platen has a footprint of 35-1/2" wide by 67" deep when in use, and runs $6295.

George Knight manual press with 32" x 42" heat platen has a documented footprint of 48" x 72" when in use, and runs $8592. The 44" x 64" version has the same documented footprint, and runs $13680.
